A team that transformed an ancient Chinese healing method into the most powerful antimalarial medicine currently available. In 1967, the Chinese government decided there was an urgent need to find a cure for malaria, forming the research team Project 523. Named after its starting date, 23 May 1987, Tu Youyou was appointed project manager of a team that combined practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine with modern chemists, pharmacologists, and scientists. Worldwide, scientists had already screened over 240,000 compounds without success, giving Tu the idea to investigate ancient Chinese medicines. Screening over 2000 tradition Chinese herbal remedies, the team came across sweet wormwood, a plant used as an antimalarial therapy in 400 AD. Tu’s team identified a compound in the plant effective against malaria, called artemisinin. Using a traditional extraction process of boiling water, they were able to isolate the compound, however, the tests were unsuccessful. Tu reread the ancient texts, discovering that the high-temperature extraction process was damaging the active ingredient; she proposed a new low-temperature extraction method. After retesting, the drug proved to be completely effective. Tu volunteered to be the first human subject, stating that as head of the research team, it was her responsibility. Declaring the drug safe, Tu conducted successful clinical trials with human patients, confirming the ground-breaking discovery. Tu pioneered a new approach to the treatment of malaria, applying modern techniques to 5000 years of Chinese traditional practitioners. Marie Curie was a pioneer in the field of radiation research and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in two different categories. A towering scientific intellect, she lived through the Victorian era, when opportunities for women and opportunities for women academically were few and far between. Marie Curie was born, Maria Sklodowska in Warsaw, Poland on November 7, 1867, to a family of prominent educators. She was forced to study underground, as she wasn’t able to be accepted in the men-only University of Warsaw. Marie then had to leave the country in order to get her Ph.D degree; becoming the first woman to receive a Ph.D degree at a French university. Upon completing her master’s degree in physics in 1893, she earned herself another degree in mathematics the following year. It was at this time, she received commission to do a study on different types of steel and their magnetic properties. Curie needed a lab space, and she was introduced to French physicist Pierre Curie. A romance developed, and the pair got married on July 26, 1895. As dedicated scientists, they formed a dynamo duo. Marie and her husband began studying the radiation and the properties of uranium. In 1898, working with the mineral pitchblende, they discovered a new radioactive element. As well as detecting the presence of another previously unknown radioactive material, which they named radium. In 1902, the couple announced they had produced a decigram of pure radium, demonstrating its existence as a unique chemical element. The following year, Marie Curie made history becoming the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize in physics. She won the honor alongside her husband and Henri Becquerel, for their work on radioactivity. In 1906, Marie suffered the loss of her husband when he was hit by a horse-drawn wagon. Taking over his teaching post at Sorbonne, becoming the institution’s first female professor. Described as one of the most remarkable women in American history, Harriet Tubman was born a slave in the early 1820’s. In 1849, Tubman escaped from slavery with her two brothers, but once they’d left, the brothers had second thoughts and they returned to the plantation. Harriet had no plans to stay, and after seeing her brother's home, she set off again. Making use of the network known as the Underground Railroad, she travelled nearly 90 miles; crossing the free state line into Pennsylvania. Rather than remaining in the safety of the North, Harriet made it her mission to rescue her family and other slaves. Using her own money she made separate journeys to rescue her sister and brother, and in 1851, she guided a group of eleven slaves North; earning herself the nickname Moses. She called ‘Moses of the People,’ largely because she was so successful at leading slaves out of the South into the North, which was symbolically known as the ‘promised land.’ During the Civil War, Harriet became the first woman to lead an armed expedition.
